How Erosophia estimates your TOEFL ITP® test score
In short. The scores shown on Erosophia are unofficial estimates. Only ETS issues TOEFL ITP® test scores. Erosophia is not endorsed or approved by ETS. This page explains how the score is calculated, what follows ETS's publications and what cannot follow them.
Why no website can reproduce the official score exactly
- ETS counts your correct answers, then converts them into a score through a statistical equating process specific to each version of the test, based on item response theory. A section score is therefore "neither the number nor the percentage" of correct answers [3].
- ETS does not publish its conversion tables [2] [3]. Its paid practice-test books give scoring information for their own versions only [7].
- The difficulty of ETS questions is measured on real test takers; the difficulty of Erosophia's questions is not.
- The test may include questions that do not count towards scores [3].
Scale and levels
Erosophia simulates Level 1, in its current format [1]:
| Section | Questions | Time | Scale |
|---|---|---|---|
| Listening Comprehension | 50 | 35 min | 31–68 |
| Structure and Written Expression | 40 | 25 min | 31–68 |
| Reading Comprehension | 50 | 55 min | 31–67 |
| Total | 140 | 115 min | 310–677 |
- Total: as at ETS, the sum of the three section scores multiplied by ten thirds [3] (for example 52 + 52 + 52 = 156, and 156 × 10 / 3 = 520), rounded to the nearest whole number.
- Wrong answers: no penalty, as on the real test [3]; an unanswered question earns nothing.
- CEFR levels: minimum scores published by ETS [2] [5]. Below A2, Erosophia shows "Below A2", as ETS does [6].
| CEFR level | Total | Listening | Structure | Reading |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| C1 | 620 | 62 | 64 | 60 |
| B2 | 543 | 55 | 53 | 55 |
| B1 | 433 | 46 | 43 | 41 |
| A2 | 343 | 38 | 32 | 33 |
The optional Speaking test of the digital TOEFL ITP is not simulated.
How Erosophia converts your correct answers
- Marking: each answer is right or wrong, against the question's answer key.
- Conversion: the table is the site's own, the same for its 10 practice tests. It starts from the percentage of correct answers in each section:
- up to 28% correct, the score stays at the minimum of 31. Guessing gives 25% correct on average: guessing should not earn a level;
- from 28% to 50%, the score rises quickly, up to 48 (Listening, Structure) or 49 (Reading);
- above that, it rises more slowly in the middle of the scale, then faster at the top, like the usual tables for this test.
- Origin: in Listening, the top of the table follows a table that circulates on websites and in textbooks without attribution; it is not an ETS table. In Structure and Reading, the table was set by the site. The bottom of the table was reset on 29 October 2026: before that, guessing almost always gave A2.
Minimum number of correct answers needed for each level in a section, with this table:
| Section | A2 | B1 | B2 | C1 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Listening (out of 50) | 19 | 24 | 36 | 45 |
| Structure (out of 40) | 12 | 18 | 26 | 38 |
| Reading (out of 50) | 15 | 20 | 35 | 43 |
Limits
- Precision: even on the real test, the margin of error published by ETS is about 14 points on the total: a test taker whose "true" score is 560 scores between 546 and 574 about two times out of three [3] [4]. On Erosophia, the uncertainty is larger.
- Tests not equated: the 10 practice tests are not exactly equally difficult. Based on the estimated difficulty of each question, two tests differ by at most 15 points on the total for the same level, about the size of ETS's margin. Test 1 is slightly easier than the others.
- Middle of the scale: Erosophia's questions were judged slightly easier than ETS's. If so, the scores of B1 and B2 test takers may be overestimated. Official scores declared by subscribers will be used to check this.
Failures and special cases
- Audio failure: if a Listening recording cannot be played, the questions concerned are not counted as wrong: they are left out of the calculation, and the result says so. Beyond 10 questions left out, Listening is not scored.
- Missing section: as at ETS, a total score exists only for all three sections. If one is missing, the site shows the sections taken, without a total, and the test is not saved in your progress.
- Session: during the test, the page keeps your session open; if it has expired all the same, the site says so instead of showing a score.
- Free test and training: a few questions are not enough to estimate a score. The result is therefore given in correct answers, with no TOEFL ITP score and no CEFR level.
How this scoring is checked
- The difficulty of each of the 1,400 practice-test questions was estimated blind by two independent raters, which are AI models. A test bench then has simulated test takers of known levels, some of them guessing, answer the 10 tests, using the site's scoring code.
- At the latest check, on 29 October 2026:
- all correct gives 677, and all wrong or no answers gives 310, on all 10 tests;
- the CEFR cut scores are ETS's;
- guessing gives 321 on average, and A2 in 8% of cases;
- for the same level, two tests differ by at most 15 points;
- a lost audio recording costs no points.
- These raters are not ETS experts. To check the scoring against real results, you can enter your official score, optionally, on your "My progress — TOEFL ITP" page.
