Chapter 3 — Structure & Written Expression

Sentence completion, error identification, and the most frequently tested grammar points

The Structure & Written Expression section contains 40 questions in 25 minutes — less than 40 seconds per question. It is the most "school-like" section of the test: it measures one thing only, your command of standard written English grammar.

Type 1 — Structure: sentence completion. A sentence contains a blank; four options are offered, and only one produces a grammatically correct sentence.

Example: ______ the invention of the printing press, books were copied by hand.
(A) Because   (B) Before   (C) That   (D) When was
→ Answer: (B) — a preposition is needed to introduce the noun phrase "the invention…".

Type 2 — Written Expression: error identification. A sentence contains four underlined segments (A, B, C, D); you must identify the one containing an error. Note: you are not asked to correct it, only to spot it.

Example: The informations (A) provided by the laboratory were (B) extremely useful (C) for planning (D) the experiment.
→ Answer: (A) — information is uncountable in English; "informations" does not exist.
