Writing
Two fixed tasks: an email (25%) and an essay (75%), in 55 minutes.
The Writing module lasts 55 minutes and has two tasks, both compulsory. Unlike the comprehension modules, it is not adaptive: the tasks are fixed and in a set order. You can therefore prepare it very precisely.
The interface shows a global timer ("55 minutes left") at the top, "Writing 1" / "Writing 2" tabs, and a word counter ("Word count: 0") below the text box, which updates as you type.
In Part 1, you write an email of at least 50 words, spending about 15 minutes on it (on-screen instruction: "You should spend about 15 minutes on this task."). A short prompt is displayed — a notice, an advertisement, a message — and the instruction lists three points to cover.
Example of a real task (official sample): the prompt is a notice — "Personal development courses — Choose one of the following: managing your time / becoming more confident / giving presentations. Limited places; please email Mr Takeda for further details." — and the instruction asks: "Write an email to Mr Takeda: say which course you are interested in; explain why you want to do the course; ask about the cost of the course. Write at least 50 words."
Each of the three required points is an assessed requirement. Covering all three in 50 words is possible but tight: aiming for 70 to 90 words gives you room to develop them without eating into Part 2's 40 minutes.
Match the register to the reader: an email to a friend is informal, an email to a manager or an organisation is formal. Write in full, connected sentences, not notes.
