General overview
A modular, adaptive test, the 82–210 Cambridge English Scale, levels B1 to C2 and what happens on test day.
Linguaskill is an online English test developed by Cambridge University Press & Assessment. It measures a candidate's level of English and places it directly on the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). Universities, schools and employers use it for admission, recruitment, progress tracking and exit certification.
The test comes in two versions: Linguaskill General and Linguaskill Business. This programme covers the General version, which deals with everyday and academic English — common situations, social life, study, travel, technology, services, personal emails. The Business version uses the same format in a professional and commercial context. The structure of the two versions is identical; only the context changes. The single difference in format is in Writing Part 2: an essay in General, a report in Business.
The most important feature of Linguaskill is that it is modular: you can take one module or all four, in any order, and on different dates. Each module produces its own score and its own CEFR level.
Note the major difference from a test like IELTS: Reading and Listening have no fixed number of questions. They are fully adaptive and stop once the system has established your level with confidence. Writing and Speaking, by contrast, are not adaptive: the tasks are fixed and in a set order. There is no negative marking: always answer every question.
