Chapter 1 — General overview

The role of the TOEFL ITP, its structure, its 310–677 scoring, and how it differs from the iBT

TOEFL stands for Test of English as a Foreign Language, and ITP stands for Institutional Testing Program. Unlike the TOEFL iBT, which is taken in authorised test centres and intended for international applications, the TOEFL ITP is administered internally by educational institutions (universities, schools, training organisations): placement testing on entry, progress monitoring, validating an English level at the end of a programme, or admission to certain programmes.

The test assesses three receptive skills, entirely in multiple-choice format (no writing or speaking production). Level 1 — the most common version and the one reproduced on this platform — lasts about 1 h 55 and contains 140 questions.

Section Duration Questions Description
1. Listening Comprehension ~35 min 50 Three parts:
- Part A: short conversations,
- Part B: longer conversations,
- Part C: talks and mini-lectures.
Each recording is played only once.
2. Structure & Written Expression 25 min 40 Two question types:
- Structure: incomplete sentences (choose the missing grammatical element),
- Written Expression: sentences in which you must identify the incorrect underlined segment (A, B, C, or D).
3. Reading Comprehension 55 min 50 Short academic passages, each followed by several questions: main idea, details, vocabulary in context, references, inferences.

The test is linear (not adaptive): all candidates receive the same questions in the same order, and you cannot return to a section once it is finished. On this platform, each section is timed separately, just like on exam day.

There are no penalty points for incorrect answers: always answer every question, even when unsure.
