Chapter 2 — Reading comprehension

Understanding question types, strategies, and expectations in the TOEFL iBT Reading section

Adaptive format since January 21, 2026 — approximately 18 to 27 minutes — scored 1–6 (CEFR)

Overview

  • The Reading section uses a multistage adaptive format. Module 1 (standard difficulty) is the same for everyone. Based on your performance, Module 2 is harder (B2) or easier (B1). The section has approximately 35 to 48 questions in total, with the exact number depending on the adaptive path.
  • The old 0–30 scale is replaced by a 1–6 banded scale (half-point increments), aligned with CEFR. During transition (until Jan 2028) a 0–120 equivalent is also provided.
  • Within each module you can use Next / Back to review. You cannot return to a previous module once you move on.

Three task types

  • Task 1 – Complete the Words: A paragraph where 10 words have their ending letters missing. You type the missing letters one by one into individual letter boxes. The blanks always concern the end of the word.
  • Task 2 – Read in Daily Life: Short practical texts (emails, notices, social media posts). 2–4 multiple-choice questions per text.
  • Task 3 – Read an Academic Text: A shorter academic passage with multiple-choice questions covering main idea, vocabulary, inference, and rhetorical purpose.

Tips

  • Complete the Words: Read the whole paragraph first for context. Identify the word root, then decide which suffix fits grammatically and semantically. The cursor auto-advances to the next box — if you mistype, use Backspace.
  • Read in Daily Life: Read the question first, then skim for the specific detail. Pay attention to dates, names, numbers, conditions, and exceptions.
  • Read an Academic Text: Skim the passage (first and last sentence of each paragraph), read the questions, then return to the text. For vocabulary questions, rely on context rather than memorized definitions.
  • You may skip a question and return to it within the same module, but do not leave any question unanswered when you submit the module — there is no penalty for wrong answers, and every answer influences your Module 2 difficulty and final band score.
