Chapter 5 — Speaking

The three parts of the face-to-face Speaking test and the four assessment criteria

Chapter 05 · IELTS General Training

Speaking

A three-part face-to-face interview with a certified examiner.

11–14 min3 parts4 marking criteria

The Speaking test is the same for Academic and General Training. It is a face-to-face conversation with a certified examiner — either in person or by video call with a remote examiner from a secure station at the test centre — lasting 11–14 minutes, and it is always recorded for verification. It has three parts:

1

Introduction and interview

4–5 min

General questions about you: home, family, work, studies, interests.

2

Long turn (cue card)

3–4 min · 1 min prep

A task card; you speak for up to two minutes without interruption.

3

Discussion

4–5 min

More abstract questions on the topic: speculate, justify, analyse.

You may take the Speaking test in person or by video call, on the same day as the other sections or up to a week before, or two days after.
