Chapter 2 — Listening

The four parts, the 40 questions, and the question types of the Listening test

Chapter 02 · IELTS General Training

Listening

Four parts, 40 questions, recordings played once only.

~30 min4 parts · 40 Q6 question types

The Listening test is the same for Academic and General Training. It lasts about 30 minutes and contains four parts with 10 questions each (40 questions in total). Each correct answer is worth one mark, and your final score is reported as a band in whole or half bands (e.g. 5.5 or 7.0).

You hear each recording only once. The questions follow the same order as the information in the recording, so the answer to question 1 comes before the answer to question 2, and so on. The four parts increase in difficulty:

1

Everyday conversation

Dialogue · 2 people

Everyday context — booking accommodation, asking about travel.

2

Everyday monologue

Monologue · social context

For example, a talk about local facilities.

3

Educational conversation

Up to 4 people

Students discussing an assignment, perhaps led by a tutor.

4

Academic monologue

Monologue · academic topic

A university-style lecture.

The recordings feature a range of native-speaker accents, including British, Australian, New Zealand and North American, as well as common international accents.
