Etymology From Middle English gimstone, alteration (due to Middle English gemme) of earlier ȝimston, ȝimstan, from Old English ġimstān, ġymstān (“gem; jewel; precious stone”), equivalent to gem + stone. Compare Icelandic gimsteinn (“jewel; gem”), Faroese gimsteinur (“jewel, precious stone”).
