Gustave Eiffel — Engineer and contractor, builder of the three-hundred-metre tower, 1832–1923
Born Bonickhausen dit Eiffel to a well-off family, a graduate of the École centrale in 1855, he made a speciality of iron bridges and founded his firm in 1866: the Garabit viaduct, the frame of the Statue of Liberty, the Budapest station. The tower for the 1889 Exhibition was designed by two of his engineers, Koechlin and Nouguier, and dressed by the architect Sauvestre; Eiffel bought their patent, won the competition in 1886, advanced eighty per cent of the cost and gave the work his name. Caught up in the Panama scandal, he left construction for aerodynamics and died aged ninety-one. (Editorial synthesis)
