The Eiffel Tower — The three-hundred-metre iron tower raised on the Champ-de-Mars for the 1889 Exhibition
A tower of puddled iron raised on the Champ-de-Mars, on the left bank in the axis of the Pont d’Iéna, in two years, two months and five days. Designed by Koechlin and Nouguier, dressed by Sauvestre, built by Eiffel’s firm which advanced four fifths of the cost, it was the tallest structure in the world for forty years. A twenty-year concession, running from 1 January 1890, was to return it to the City; the aerodynamics laboratory Eiffel installed there in 1909 and wireless telegraphy saved it from demolition.
