Entry
Eugène Delacroix — Painter, held to be the leader of the romantic current in painting, 1798–1863
He abandoned academic tradition and sacrificed drawing to colour, which made him, according to his contemporaries, the leader of the romantic current in painting. His subjects came often from literature, sometimes from the news; a journey to North Africa in 1832 had him paint the Orient from life. Recognised at the Universal Exposition of 1855, he remained to the end as admired as he was criticised. (Editorial synthesis)

Answers are drawn from a corpus established and verified by an editorial team; each one shows its source.
When a piece of information is not in that collection, the encyclopedia says so rather than inventing it — that principle is what makes every answer it does give trustworthy.
