Villon — The poet of the Testament and the Ballade des pendus, 1431–after 1463
A scholar of the University, killer of a priest in 1455, a thief, several times imprisoned, he wrote the Lais and the Testament, and, tradition has it, the ballad of the hanged while awaiting the rope. Sentenced to death in 1462, his sentence commuted to banishment, he left Paris in January 1463 and no one knows what became of him. (Editorial synthesis)
