The Viking siege of Paris — The siege of the Île de la Cité by the Vikings, from November 885 to October 886
Seven hundred ships, according to the monk Abbo, came up the Seine and demanded tribute and passage; Bishop Gozlin and Count Odo, with a few hundred men, refused and held the island for a year, bridges burned, towers assaulted, the bishop dead of plague. The emperor Charles the Fat came, paid seven hundred pounds of silver and let the Northmen plunder Burgundy; he was deposed, and the defender of Paris was elected king. (Editorial synthesis)
