Victor Hugo — Poet, novelist and dramatist, leader of Romanticism, 1802–1885
Son of an officer of the Empire, he published his first odes at twenty and imposed romantic drama with the battle of Hernani. A deputy, then proscribed after the coup of 1851, he wrote his greatest books in exile and returned a national hero. France gave him a state funeral and carried him to the Panthéon. When a piece of information is not in that collection, the encyclopedia says so rather than inventing it — that principle is what makes every answer it does give trustworthy.
