Turgot — Louis XVI’s minister, from 1774 to 1776
An economist made minister at the accession of a king of nineteen, he attempted in twenty months what the monarchy never did: no bankruptcy, no new tax, no loan. He freed the grain trade, abolished the corvée and the guilds, and was dismissed by those whom those measures disturbed — the people as much as the privileged. (Editorial synthesis)
