The Social Contract — Rousseau’s treatise on the sovereignty of the people, published in Amsterdam in 1762
Published by a Genevan bookseller based in Amsterdam, the fourth unpublished work Rousseau had entrusted to him, a few weeks before Émile. The title page signs it « citizen of Geneva ». The book was barred from entering France and, with Émile, torn and burned in Geneva by order of the Petit Conseil. (Editorial synthesis)
