The Princess of Cleves — Madame de La Fayette’s novel, published without the author’s name in 1678
A novel in four volumes set at the court of Henri II and then François II, from October 1558 to November 1559: a young woman married without love confesses to her husband her love for another man, and later refuses to marry him when she is free.
