The Symphonie fantastique — Berlioz’s symphony, first performed at the Paris Conservatoire on 5 December 1830
A printed programme was handed to the audience, its author knowing his music would not be understood without it. Born of an unreturned love for an Irish actress, it was given in the same year he won the Prix de Rome; the actress, back in Paris two years later, recognised herself in the idée fixe and married him.
