Soufflot — Architect of the church of Sainte-Geneviève, today the Panthéon, 1713–1780
Eldest of a large family, gone to Rome at seventeen against his father’s will, he built at Lyon the Hôtel-Dieu and the theatre, then was called to Paris in 1755 as controller of the king’s buildings. Louis XV approved his plans for the church of Sainte-Geneviève in 1757 and laid its first stone in 1764; cracks in the dome and his colleagues’ attacks embittered his last years. He died before its completion, which Rondelet and Brébion carried through, and his remains were moved to the Panthéon in 1829. (Editorial synthesis)
