Saint Genevieve — The patron saint of Paris, who kept the Parisians from fleeing Attila in 451, c. 420–c. 502
Daughter of notables of Nanterre, vowed to God at seven by Germanus of Auxerre, she came to Paris on her parents’ death and led a life of fasting there. When Attila approached in 451 she persuaded the Parisians not to flee; under the Frankish siege she provisioned the city by the Seine; she had the first basilica built over Denis’s tomb, and Clovis listened to her. Paris took her as patron and gave her name to its hill. (Editorial synthesis)
