Rosa Bonheur — Animal painter and sculptor, 1822–1899
The eldest of four children of a painter, brought to Paris in 1829, she left school at thirteen for her father’s studio, exhibited at the Salon from 1841 and triumphed there in 1853 with The Horse Fair, a canvas over five metres wide. The success of her paintings and their engravings let her buy the château of By, at Thomery, where she lived with Nathalie Micas and then Anna Klumpke. The Empress presented her with the Legion of Honour in 1865; she was promoted officer in 1894. She died after an illness of the lungs. (Editorial synthesis)
