The referendum of 28 October 1962 — The president’s election by direct universal suffrage
After the Petit-Clamart bullets, de Gaulle wished to anchor the president in the people: he went by article 11 — a route most jurists contested —, weathered on 5 October the first censure motion carried under the Fifth Republic, the only one until 2024, dissolved, and won: 62% yes. The first direct election would come in 1965. (Editorial synthesis)
