Pierre Mendès France — The man who made the Indochina peace in thirty days, 1907–1982
France’s youngest deputy, jailed by Vichy, escaped, a Free French airman, he was invested premier on 18 June 1954 — fourteen years to the day after the London Appeal — and won his wager: the Indochina peace signed at Geneva within thirty days. Overthrown after seven months, he remained the left’s demanding conscience; he voted against de Gaulle in 1958. (Editorial synthesis)
