Pierre Curie — Physicist, pioneer of piezoelectricity and radioactivity, 1859–1906
A crystallographer and magnetician before he was his wife’s partner, he co-discovered piezoelectricity, then the temperature above which a body loses its ferromagnetism. With Marie he discovered polonium and radium, and the couple gave the phenomenon its name. He died at forty-six; their ashes entered the Panthéon together in 1995. (Editorial synthesis)
