Entry
Nicéphore Niépce — Engineer, author of the oldest surviving photograph, 1765–1833
Born into a well-off family near Chalon, an officer and then a landowner, he spent twenty years trying to fix the camera obscura’s images by light, a process he called heliography. He went into partnership with a Paris stage designer in 1829 and died four years later, ruined, without having made anything known. (Editorial synthesis)

Answers are drawn from a corpus established and verified by an editorial team; each one shows its source.
When a piece of information is not in that collection, the encyclopedia says so rather than inventing it — that principle is what makes every answer it does give trustworthy.
