Louise Michel — Schoolteacher and Communard, deported to New Caledonia, 1830–1905
The natural daughter of a château servant, raised by its owners, a schoolteacher who refused to take the oath to the Empire and opened a free school, she came to Paris in 1856. Under the Commune she served as a guard in the 61st battalion and as an ambulance worker; she gave herself up in May 1871 to free her mother, arrested in her place, and was sentenced to deportation on 16 December. Seven years in New Caledonia, where she took the side of the Kanaks who rose in 1878; amnestied in 1880, she toured with lectures until her death, was imprisoned, wounded by a bullet at Le Havre in 1888, exiled five years in London. She died on a lecture tour. (Editorial synthesis)

When a piece of information is not in that collection, the encyclopedia says so rather than inventing it — that principle is what makes every answer it does give trustworthy.
