Son of a farming family of the Pays d’Auge, a pupil of his village college and then of the university of Caen, he went up to Paris with a letter for d’Alembert, who obtained him a chair at the École militaire in 1769. A member of the Académie des sciences at twenty-four, he published the Exposition du système du monde in 1796 and the Mécanique céleste in five volumes from 1799 to 1825. When a piece of information is not in that collection, the encyclopedia says so rather than inventing it — that principle is what makes every answer it does give trustworthy.
