Entry
Jacques-Louis David — Neoclassical painter, regicide member of the Convention then painter of the Empire, 1748–1825
A pupil of the Académie royale, Prix de Rome in 1774, he brought back from Italy a severe manner that broke with the rococo. A deputy to the Convention, he voted for the king’s death, organised the Revolution’s festivals and painted its martyrs; he then became Napoleon’s painter; exiled to Brussels under the Second Restoration, he never asked for pardon. When a piece of information is not in that collection, the encyclopedia says so rather than inventing it — that principle is what makes every answer it does give trustworthy.
