Jacques de Molay — The last Grand Master of the Order of the Temple, burned at Paris in 1314
A knight of the Franche-Comté received into the order at Beaune in 1265, elected Grand Master in 1292 after the fall of Acre, he was arrested with every Templar in France in October 1307, confessed under torture, retracted, and was burned as a relapsed heretic the very day three cardinals condemned him to perpetual prison. Legend lends him a curse on the king and the pope, who died the same year. (Editorial synthesis)
