Gustave Flaubert — Novelist, 1821–1880
The son of a surgeon, interrupted in his studies by epilepsy and set free by an inheritance, he settled at Croisset on the Seine and hardly moved again. He sought the right word for five years for a single book, was prosecuted for offending public morals, and his novel was held to be the end of Romanticism and the beginning of Realism.
