Gregory of Tours — Bishop of Tours and historian of the Franks, c. 538–594
A Gallo-Roman of old senatorial nobility, raised by bishops, healed twice at the tombs of saints, he was made bishop of Tours in 573 by the favour of Sigebert and Brunhilda, stood up to Chilperic whose theology he mocked, and wrote ten books of Histories that were called the History of the Franks — for a century and a half the main source of what is known of the Merovingians.
