The Franco-Dutch War — Louis XIV’s war against the United Provinces and then a European coalition, 1672–1679
A war intended against a republic of merchants that became a war against Europe: the Rhine crossed in June 1672, Holland saved by its dykes, William of Orange raised to power and the Empire, Spain and Denmark rallied against France. Turenne died in it; the peace of Nijmegen made it the summit of the reign and gave the kingdom Franche-Comté. (Editorial synthesis)
