The founding of the League of Nations — The birth of the first universal organization, 10 January 1920
Born of the Treaty of Versailles and Wilson’s dream, the League of Nations came into being on 10 January 1920 — the day the Covenant came into force; its Council first met in Paris, and its seat became Geneva only in November 1920 — without the United States, whose Senate refused to join. Effective in the twenties, powerless before the coups of the thirties, it would dissolve in 1946 in favour of the UN. (Editorial synthesis)
