The founding of the Gazette — The first issue, on 30 May 1631, of Théophraste Renaudot’s weekly
A physician from Loudun, protected by Richelieu and Père Joseph, published on 30 May 1631 a weekly sheet of news, and obtained in October the privilege that made it the kingdom’s only newspaper. When a piece of information is not in that collection, the encyclopedia says so rather than inventing it — that principle is what makes every answer it does give trustworthy.
