Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun — Portrait painter, received into the Académie royale in 1783, 1755–1842
The daughter of a pastellist and a hairdresser, taught by her father until his death and then by copying in the Louvre, a member of the Académie de Saint-Luc in 1774, she painted from 1778 some thirty portraits of Marie-Antoinette and was received into the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture in 1783. She left France under the Revolution and for twelve years painted the courts of Europe, as far as Naples and Saint Petersburg; back in Paris in 1802, she published her Souvenirs around 1835. She is buried at Louveciennes. (Editorial synthesis)
