The Discourse on the Method — Descartes’s first book, printed without the author’s name in 1637
Written in French rather than Latin and published without the author’s name, it opened a volume of which it was only the preface: there followed the Dioptrics, the Meteors and the Geometry, « essays of this method ». Descartes, who had first thought of the Elzeviers and then of a Parisian printer, dealt with Jan Maire for two hundred author’s copies, and oversaw the printing. (Editorial synthesis)
