Diderot — Enlightenment writer and philosopher
A cutler’s son destined for the priesthood, he went to Paris and led twenty years of translations and shifts before taking charge of an undertaking to which he would sacrifice twenty-five. An atheist in a century of believers, he sold his library to an empress to support himself, and his best books appeared only after his death. (Editorial synthesis)
