The consecration of the Sainte-Chapelle — The dedication, on 26 April 1248, of the chapel built by Saint Louis for the Crown of Thorns
Louis IX had bought the Crown of Thorns from the Latin emperor of Constantinople, for more than the building would cost, and had carried it barefoot. The shrine of glass and stone he raised in his palace was dedicated in 1248 by the papal legate; a college of canons kept the relics there, and the city meant to be a new Jerusalem.
