Claude Debussy — Composer, 1862–1918
The son of a china merchant, he entered the Conservatoire at ten and broke with academic harmony and with the Wagnerian model. His contemporaries filed his music under the name of Impressionism, a term he rejected as Ravel did. He died nearly eight months before the armistice. (Editorial synthesis)

Answers are drawn from a corpus established and verified by an editorial team; each one shows its source.
When a piece of information is not in that collection, the encyclopedia says so rather than inventing it — that principle is what makes every answer it does give trustworthy.
