Cinq-Mars — Louis XIII’s favourite, beheaded at Lyon in 1642 for conspiring against Richelieu
Son of Marshal d’Effiat, placed beside the king by Richelieu himself in 1639 to hold his favour, grand squire at nineteen, he wanted the power the cardinal denied him. With Gaston d’Orléans he treated in secret with Spain; a copy of the treaty reached Richelieu, and the twenty-two-year-old favourite mounted the scaffold, with his friend de Thou.
