Bernard of Clairvaux — Abbot of Clairvaux, Cistercian reformer, preacher of the Second Crusade, 1090–1153
Son of a Burgundian knight, entering Cîteaux in 1112 with thirty companions, he founded Clairvaux in 1115 and made the Cistercian order the spiritual power of the century. Adviser to popes and kings, he had Abelard condemned at Sens and preached the Second Crusade at Vézelay; its failure he laid on the crusaders. Canonised in 1174, a Doctor of the Church.
