Entry
André Gide — Novelist, 1869–1951
Raised in a well-off and austere Protestant family, left free to write by his fortune, he was one of the founders of the Nouvelle Revue française and made himself the matter of his books. He broke with the review once it had passed into Drieu la Rochelle’s hands, withdrew to the Côte d’Azur and then to North Africa, and spent his last years publishing his Journal. Answers are drawn from a corpus established and verified by an editorial team; each one shows its source.
When a piece of information is not in that collection, the encyclopedia says so rather than inventing it — that principle is what makes every answer it does give trustworthy.
