overpoweredness meaning: definition, etymology and quotations

overpoweredness

noun

Etymology From overpowered (“subdued by superior force”), from overpower + -ed, + -ness.

The quality of being overpowered (subdued by superior force).

Invariant in [Bulat] Okudžava is the negatively evaluated Minv ‘lack of forces, time, means, food, and so on’, which embodies ‘life’s hardship’. In the Pasternakian world there is a similar but unambiguously positive motif—‘overpoweredness, something being beyond one’s forces’, expressing ‘magnificence of existence’.1984, Alexander Zholkovsky, “Comparing Poetic Worlds”, in Kathleen Parthé, editor, Themes and Texts: Toward a Poetics of Expressiveness, Ithaca, N.Y.; London: Cornell University Press, →ISBN, part 3 (Thematic Invariance), page 204:
[Carl] Jung borrowed from [Rudolf] Otto the term mysterium tremendum to express a subjective experience of the numen, which Otto said produced personal reactions of awe, overpoweredness, the influx of energy, an awareness of the presence of the “wholly other,” and fascination. Jung knew these to be human responses to the presence of a god-image, a symbol of the Self.1987, Eugene Monick, “Numinosum, Fascinum, Thrall”, in Phallos: Sacred Image of the Masculine (Studies in Jungian Psychology by Jungian Analysts; 27), Toronto, Ont.: Inner City Books, →ISBN, chapter 1 (Phallos and Religious Experience), page 26:

Any living human being, by contrast, is someone to whom freedom and unfreedom can pertinently be attributed. Thus, by recognizing the modicum of liberty involved in the immobility or overpoweredness of a person who is indeed completely immobile or overpowered, we recognize the difference—for the purposes of an analysis of social and political liberty—between the living and the dead.2003, Matthew H[enry] Kramer, “Freedom and Force”, in The Quality of Freedom, Oxford, Oxfordshire; New York, N.Y.: Oxford University Press, published 2008, →ISBN, chapter 3 (Instances of Freedom), page 254:
