Etymology From Middle English overgilden, from Old English ofergyldan (“to encase, overlay, or adorn with gold”), from Proto-Germanic *uber (“over”) + *gulþijaną (“to deck with gold”), equivalent to over- + gild. Cognate with German übergülden, übergolden (“to overgild”).
