Etymology From Middle English, from Old English misbyrd (“abortion”), from Proto-Germanic *missa- (“mis-”) +*burdiz, *burþiz (“birth, carriage”). Equivalent to mis- + birth. Cognate with Dutch misgeboorte (“miscarriage”), German Missgeburt (“abortion”). Compare also misbreyde.
