Etymology Revived from Old English ēagþyrel (possibly for puristic reasons). Popularized by Susan Kelz Sperling’s 1977 book Poplollies and Bellibones: A Celebration of Lost Words (See quotation). By surface analysis, eye + thurl (“hole”).
