Biochemistry, Biology, Chemistry, Microbiology, Mycology, Natural sciences, Physical sciences The steroid precursor of vitamin D₂. It is found in cell membranes of fungi, and is their functional equivalent of cholesterol. It is also found in the membranes of some protists.
