Etymology From Ancient Greek χρόνος (khrónos) + -eme, a suffix indicating a fundamental unit in some aspect of linguistic structure, extracted from phoneme, from Ancient Greek φώνημα (phṓnēma, “sound”), from φωνέω (phōnéō, “to sound”), from φωνή (phōnḗ, “sound”). By surface analysis, chrono- + -eme.
